The Dental Implant History

Dental implants have come a long way since their first uses.Dental implants have come a very long way since their source in Ancient China. That’s right, they have been around for more than 4,000 years! Don’t worry, though, here at Todd Rogers Dental we are far more technologically advanced than they were back then. Understanding a dental implant before you get one is important, and understanding where they came from is equally fascinating.

What is a Dental Implant?

The first thing that you should understand is what a dental implant is as of right now. If you went in to get one today, you would likely receive a small titanium (or zirconium) post surgically installed into your jaw where it can heal over the next four to six months. We can even provide a catalyst material to enhance and speed up your healing process. This provides a “root” to which we can secure one or more false teeth. Of course, this kind of technology was not available when it all began.

Dental Implants Throughout History

The very first recorded use of any dental implant was 4,000 years ago in ancient China, where small bamboo rods were held in place in the mouth to fill in the gap left by missing teeth. These were neither functional nor were they cosmetically enhancing in any way either. Archaeologists have since found two different cases of metals being used as tooth replacement options. The first was found 3,000 years ago in the tomb of an Egyptian king, who had a copper peg hammered into his jaw. The second was 2,300 years ago in the grave of a Celtic man in France who had a peg of iron. These, we can only assume, were placed there after the death of the men, as it would have been excruciating to have done in life. There is also evidence that earlier cultures also used animal’s teeth from those that they hunted along with the teeth of slaves.

The Evolution of Implant Materials

In the 18th century, different metals began being experimented with including gold. These would not fuse or stay in a way that was adequate for daily use. It was not until 1952 that an orthopedic surgeon discovered the fusing qualities of titanium by accident when he was treating a rabbit with a broken femur. It was not until 1965, though, that the first titanium implant was placed in a living volunteer and magic happened. From there, magic has continued happening, and the technology has only gotten better and better. We now have standard implants, zirconium implants, zygomatic implants, and more!
